Skarvanes lies on Sandoy’s west-coast.
It has a view over the sea towards the island of Skúvoy.
Skarvanes means ‘foreland of cormorant’.
There is an old preserved water-mill in the village. Every village had one of these in the old days. They are able to work with only a small amount of water. They were used for milling grain.
In the area there is a rock called Kyriusteinar. It was considered a shrine in the old days. When leaving the village this was the last point from where the church was in sight. (Not a real church but a holy place where people prey!?!) Here people would turn around mumble ‘Kyrie eleison’ and throw a little stone over their shoulder before continuing. ‘Kyrie eleison’ is Greek and means ‘Lord, have mercy upon us’.
