Trøllanes is the northernmost of the 4 villages on the island of Kalsoy.
In 1986 it was connected to the other villages on the island by a road through 4 tunnels on the island. Before that it was a very isolated place.
From Trøllanes it is possible to walk to the north-tip of Kalsoy. There is a lighthouse and from this place there is a magnificent view to many of the steep cliffs of the northern islands.
Trøllanes means ‘Foreland of Trolls’.
Tradition says that the village has that name because trolls visited it on Twelfth Night (6th of January) every year. The trolls swarmed in to the village and it was so terrible that the villagers decided to leave for Mikladalur while it was going on.
One time an old woman stayed in Trollanes when the rest of the people left the village. She was to weak to be able to make the trip to Mikladalur. She hid under a table when the night came on and the trolls came flocking. The trolls started singing and dancing and making a terrible noise. The old woman under the table got so scared that she burst out “Jesus, have mercy upon me”. When the trolls heard the name ‘Jesus’ that the hate they were terrified and ran away screaming.
Since that night no trolls have been observed in Trøllanes. |
