Streymnes lies on Streymoy’s east coast in a valley that it shares with the village Hvalvík that lies to the south.
Norwegians built the first whaling-station in Gjanoyri close to Streymnes in 1893. It was active until it was shut down in 1927. For whaling see also Lopra.
