Víkarbyrgi is a small village on the island of Suðuroy that is now depopulated.
Víkarbyrgi was connected to the rest of the villages on Suðuroy by a road in 1977. Hence it was the
last village on in the Faroe Islands to be provided with a road.
The nature surrounding Víkarbyrgi is beautiful. Just outside the inlet is an islet called ‘Baglholmur’. Its name is said to come of the Irish word ‘bachall’ that means ‘crosier’. Irish monks are said to have lived here even before the arrival of the Norse.
Víkarbyrgi did not escape The Black Death in the 14th century. Actually everybody was killed except a woman called ‘Sneppan’. |
